This is an extremely
rare find; very few of these instruments exist anymore. The general tonal
effects of these 1950s ES organs are quite different from most others; some
of their tonal effects defy accurate imitation by any other instruments. They
had a 12" coaxial speaker built into the consoles, which is minimally
adequate, but they sound really nice when played through good external speakers,
preferably two speaker systems, one of which should be a Leslie. This statement
of course applies to ALL electronic organs, regardless of manufacture.
A chorus built up of the 4600 instruments' flute voices is surprisingly suggestive of a pipe organ, and the percussion effects are useful for a number of different novelty effects. There is a natural ensemble effect in these Wurlitzer ES instruments because each reed/tone generator runs independently of all of the others and therefore various octaves of the same note are not locked into synchronized perfection, which is decidedly an unnatural phenomenon never found in real musical instruments or groups of musicians working together. The tones are derived from a number of continuously vibrating brass reeds in a substantial soundproof enclosure, the reeds and their associated pickups acting as variable vibrating capacitors to generate suitable AC audio waveforms which ultimately go to speakers to become sound. In this latter respect, they are like all other electronic organs, but the major difference lies in the waveforms derived from the reed/capacitors. See our technical article for a complete description along with a multitude of pictures detailing these most intriguing instruments. Quality of workmanship is very high. In their heyday, these instruments were quite expensive. This instrument is being offered by Brett Johnson. His contact information is: Brett Johnson
