This excellent instrument
is typical of the newer so-called LSI Hammonds. These instruments do not use
a tone-wheel generator, instead they have a completely solid state generator
that derives all of its pitches by frequency division from a single master
oscillator that operates in the mHz range. Because of this, the instrument
is tunable, that is, it is fitted with a transposer that changes the pitch
of the entire organ if desired. So if you play in the key of C but want to
sound like you are playing in F# for example, you simply set the transposer
to F#, and instantly the entire instrument is retuned so that playing in the
key of C sounds as though you were in F#. This is a godsend for people who
have difficulty in transposing by ear or who have only learned to play in
one particular key.
